Tattoo Removal
There are varying reasons why people consider tattoo removal.
The only positive fact of tattoo removal will be that you are rid of the unwanted tattoos you
regret wearing or are forced to get rid of. Due to the advances in technology and
available products, you should give serious consideration to all
of the methods of removal that have been proven to work and decide which method is right for you. Beware
though; there are products on the market that claim to remove a tattoo
and all that will be removed is some money from your wallet.
Many people associate pain with tattoo removal. Although the
process may have been very painful in the past, the technology of today offers a few painless methods of removing tattoos.
In the medical field, there are currently two methods of
tatoo removal that are rapidly becoming more and more popular. Laser tattoo removal and
light based technology. Both surgeries used light energy to destroy the
ink in the tattoo. The energy of the light is absorbed by the ink in the tattoo, thus breaking it up into very small particles. Once the ink begins to break up, it can then be
easily passed through and out of your body by the immune system. In most
cases this is an extremely safe method, because the ink is broken into micro size particles which easily pass
through the body with no signs of complications. Below are a few
details of these two surgical methods.
Laser Tattoo Removal
Lasers are the most common method used for tatoo removal
today. This method works by targeting the ink with highly concentrated pulses of light that break the ink into minute fragments. These fragments are then passed from the
body by your immune system. Be aware though, laser tattoo removal requires more than one treatment.
With each succeeding treatment you have, the laser penetrates better, fragmenting the ink.
But also, having more treatments does more damage to your skin. The
treatments cause painful blisters and scabs that can eventually lead to scarring. Though, experts in laser tattoo removal therapy say that with today's technology
scarring is minimal, sometimes even non-existent.
The pain associated with laser tattoo removal is described by
most as tolerable; rubber bands flicking the skin or splatters of hot grease. While this pain may be
bearable, the real pain with this type of tatto removal will be felt
in your bank account. You may need 2-10 sessions, depending on your tattoo make-up. Each session will
cost in the range of 200 to 800 dollars. A larger, more detailed,
colorful tattoo cost thousands of dollars to remove. What is worse is there are no guarantees of
the effectiveness of the tatto removal.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
This process of removing tattoos is actually similar to
the hair removal surgery. The surgeon or doctor who performs the surgery will hold a wand to the skin that
is being treated. The pulses of light are aimed at the tattoo and break
up the ink. The wand is normally held right up against the tattoo, making the pulses of light much more effective. Normally, the feeling that you will experience is best
described as a rubber band flicking constantly against your skin. The
pain with larger tattoos could certainly be a bit more intense.
The location of the tattoo is another factor with this type
of tattoo remover, as sensitive areas may cause you quite a bit more pain
and discomfort. If the area in which you have the tattoo doesn’t have a lot of muscle or tissue, you will
probably want to request more novocaine before starting the
procedure.
This tattoo removal method is deemed as less painful than
laser tattoo removal, and more effective, requiring less treatment
sessions. The bad news is that it also carries a
beefier price tag. Checking on the price at one of the local medical facilities, returned quite a staggering figure of 10 dollars per pulse. Depending on how many
pulses per session your tattoo remover requires, this could add up to a
significant amount of money.
Both laser and light based treatments are somewhat similar.
With both of these tatoo removal procedures, the doctor performing the procedure will always apply a cooling gel to the tattoo area to cool the skin and conduct the energy of the
light. This cooling gel helps to draw the light, and at the same time
protect your skin. The gel will feel cool to the touch, although it will help your skin when the light pulses start
to break the ink apart.
If you’ve been thinking about surgical tattoo removal, you
should consider both light and laser based procedures. Keep in mind that they are
both expensive, and both impose risks. Depending on how big your
tattoo is and the complexity of the procedure, you may need to spend a day or so in the hospital. Even though both procedures do offer ways to remove a tattoo, you’ll need
to think long and hard before you make a final
decision.
