Tattoo Removal "What They Don't Want You to
Know"
There are other methods of surgically removing
tattoos besides Laser Tattoo Removal and Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, but most are painful and
somewhat ineffective. These other methods are listed below with a short explanation of each procedure. In the past,
these methods have proven to cause skin damage and result in severe scarring. The following methods are only used
today in extreme cases where laser tattoo removal is not an option. If you are looking to remove a
tattoo surgically, there are several methods of getting a tatoo removal available today. The method that your
physician chooses will depend upon several factors, including but not limited to, the size of the tattoo, its
location, the length of time the tattoo has been on the skin, quality of the tattoo and how well the patient
heals.
Excision
This is a popular method of tattoo remover especially
when the tattoo area is small. The advantage of this method is that the entire tattoo can be
removed. For larger tattoos, however, it may be necessary to perform the
tatto removal in stages, removing the center initially and then the edges at a later date.
A local anesthetic is injected to numb the area prior to this
type of tatto removal. For a small tattoo, excision involves removing the tattooed area of skin and then stitching it closed. For a larger tattoo, the skin is removed and a skin
graft from another part of the body is used to cover the area. With this
procedure, there is minimal bleeding which is easily controlled with electrocautery.
Dermabrasion
Usually, a small portion of the tattoo is sprayed with a
solution that freezes the area. The tattoo is then "sanded" with a rotary abrasive instrument causing the skin to peel. Due to the fact that some bleeding is likely to occur, a
dressing is immediately applied to the area. In the process of
Dermabrasion, a small rotary abrasive tool, about the size of a pencil is used to sand off the layers of the skin,
thus obliterating the tattoo.
Salabrasion
Salabrasion is a procedure which dates back centuries but is
a method that is sometimes still used today to remove a tattoo. As with the
other methods, a local anesthetic is used to numb the tattooed
area. A solution of tap water dipped in table salt is applied to the surface area of
the tattoo. An abrading apparatus (sanding device) much the same as
the one used with dermabrasion, or sometimes a simple device such as a wood block wrapped with gauze, will be used to vigorously abrade the area. A dressing will
then be applied when the area becomes deep red in color.
Although these procedures are still used in certain cases,
today laser tattoo removal and Light Amplification have become the standard surgical treatments
for tattoo removal. These procedures offer an almost bloodless, low risk,
effective alternative with very little side effects. All of the surgical tatto removal procedures
are usually done on an outpatient basis, in a series of visits.
Depending on several factors a topical or local anesthetic may or may not be necessary.
What Results Can Be
Expected?
Regardless of which surgical remove tattoo method is used,
including Laser Tattoo Removal and Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, some scarring or color
variations are likely to remain. Healing time will vary depending upon
several factors, including the size and depth of the tattoo, age of the tattoo, the
quality of the tattoo, the removal procedure used and the patient's
healing ability. It is important for the patient to discuss with the physician and understand all of the various surgical procedures available, how they are performed, and
the probable results. If you get a tattoo surgically removed,
always follow the doctor's recommended care of the treated area.
